Essay Finding a Cure Stem Cell Research - 1321 Words

â€Å"Cancer is a disease that will come after you, your family, your work, and every facet of your life.† It is the second leading cause of deaths in the United States, and is directly associated to obesity. In fact, one out of every three woman, and half of men, will develop cancer in their lifetimes. Cancer attacks health, attitude, and confidence with array of chemicals, tests, treatments, and paperwork. In many cases it will come back, even stronger and terrifying. Since cancer is such an immense deal, and a lot of people are dying from it, then let’s find a cure for it (Dennis). Fortunately, for my dad we were able to find a cure. He used Greek words carcinoma and carcinos to describe the tumors; he then called cancer â€Å"karkinos.† The words he used were actually words used to describe a crab, which was thought to describe the tumors. Hippocrates believed the human body was composed of four different liquids: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. He believed cancer was caused by one’s body having too much black bile in it He treated the cancers he found with bloodletting, diet and laxatives to treat his theory (humor-based therapy) this technique was used until the 19th century. Yet, he was not the first to discover cancer; the world’s oldest documented case of cancer was from Ancient Egypt in 1500 B.C. Th ey documented it on a papyrus, recording eight different cases of different tumors on the breast; they treated these cases by castration. They also reported cancer is an untreatable disease, and is only palliative treatment. The Ancient Egyptians believed cancer was caused by the Gods. Cancer is where an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells is taking over the normal growing cells. There are five common ways to treat cancer; you can have surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and biological therapy. With surgery you have the cancer spots removed by operation. The next step, radiation therapy; the doctors use radiation waves, to kill the cancerous cells or effected area.
